The correct wax makes all the difference! Without the correct wax, your bases will stick to the snow. Hard wax goes with hard snow and soft wax goes with soft snow and air temperature is often different than the snow temperature. So how do you tell the difference? With a snow thermometer. In a handy pen shape, it measures from +40° to –35° or C/104° to 31° F with exact measurments from 0° to –20° or C/32° to -4° F. Now you'll be able to tell which wax to use to allow your gear to slide at its best.
